What you need to enter the territory of Portugal

To enter the territory of Portugal, foreign citizens must meet the following conditions

  1.     Have a travel document valid for at least 3 months beyond the intended length of stay.
  2.     Have a valid and appropriate visa for the purpose of the stay. This visa must always be requested from a Portuguese diplomatic mission or professional consulate abroad.
  3.     Have sufficient means of subsistence for the period of stay.
  4.     Lack of registration in the SEF Integrated Information System or in the Schengen Information System.
  5.     For short stays, nationals of the following third countries are exempt from visa requirements.

Visa applications (short stay visas / temporary visas / resident visas)

Residence, temporary and short-stay visas are issued only to third-country nationals who meet the following general conditions:

- have not been subjected to a measure of expulsion from the country and in the subsequent period are under a ban on entry into the national territory;
- not indicated for the purposes of exclusion from the Schengen Information System of any of the Contracting Parties;
- are not indicated for the purposes of non-admission to the SEF Unified Information System, in accordance with Article 33;
   - have the means of subsistence determined by the order of the members of the Government responsible for internal administration and social solidarity;
 - have a valid travel document;
 - have travel insurance.

The application for a visa is submitted to the consular office in the country of permanent residence or in the country of consular jurisdiction of the state of residence.

Foreigners entering Portugal through an uncontrolled border are required to declare this fact within 3 working days from the date of entry to the Aliens and Borders Office, with the exception of foreign nationals:

  •     Residents or persons who have permission to stay in the country for a period of more than 6 months.
  •     Who benefits from Community treatment or its equivalent.
  •     Stay in hotels or similar establishments.
